BITCOIN SETS NEW HIGH
Bitcoin sets a new all-time-high this week, reaching $66,950, as the SEC approved ProShares Bitcoin Futures ETF (ticker: BITO) which began trading on Tuesday. The ETF, which is tied to Bitcoin futures contracts rather than directly to the current price of Bitcoin, is the first U.S. bitcoin-linked ETF offering. The significance of this milestone is that people who might otherwise shy away from the hurdles of buying crypto on an exchange can now trade the ETF during regular market hours and can easily incorporate it into retirement and savings plans. The rise in Bitcoin also helped push other cryptocurrencies like Ethereum higher, as well as crypto-related stocks such as Coinbase — both of which gained about 7% this week.

Novavax is a biotechnology company promoting improved global health through the discovery, development and commercialization of innovative vaccines to prevent serious infectious diseases and address urgent, global health needs. Our vaccine candidates, including both its coronavirus vaccine candidate (“NVX-CoV2373”), and our seasonal quadrivalent influenza vaccine candidate (“NanoFlu™”), are genetically engineered, three-dimensional nanostructures of recombinant proteins critical to disease pathogenesis. We believe that our protein-subunit-based candidates elicit differentiated responses that may be more efficacious than naturally occurring immunity or other vaccine approaches. Additionally, our Matrix-M™ adjuvant has been shown to enhance functional immune responses and has been well-tolerated in multiple clinical trials. To date, we have formulated many of the vaccine candidates in our pipeline with our Matrix-M™ adjuvant, including NVX-CoV2373 and NanoFlu™. Matrix-M™, has been shown to enhance immune responses and has been well-tolerated in multiple clinical trials.
Stagflation is becoming a hot topic of economic discussion these days, and investors will soon have to factor the possibilities of it occurring into their financial models, if they have not already. Stagflation is an economic event in which the inflation rate is high, economic growth rate slows, and unemployment remains steadily high. Such an unfavorable combination is feared and can be a dilemma for governments since most actions designed to lower inflation may raise unemployment levels, and policies designed to decrease unemployment may worsen inflation. During the 1970s period of stagflation, the CPIXYOY index bottomed at around 2.7% in 1972 and peaked at 12.3% in 1974 while the SPX index retreated nearly 38% in that same time frame. After hitting a trough of 4.9% in December, 1976, CPI spiked for a second time to 14.8% in March of 1980. Within that time frame the SPX Index declined about 8.17%. The United States economy also saw three definitive recessions between 1971 and 1982, while the unemployment rate remained, on average, well above the 4-5% target range for a healthy economy.
